CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Ethan protected her from the worst of the gush of rain as they ran to the barn, while he also made way for Irene and Donna and Lucy and Jimmy Trimarco to get in to the shelter ahead of them.

As they shook the rain off, Paige caught movement from the corner of her eye and saw Kiernan and Felicity by themselves, near some of the stacked hay bales.

Their laughter faded as they looked into each other’s eyes.

Paige thought she could feel the heat from where she stood.

Kiernan took off his cowboy hat and leaned in. They were kissing as they dropped from sight below the level of the hay bale.

For an instant she imagined she could see steam rising from the spot.

“Looks like we’ve got some escapees,” Ethan said from beside her.

But he wasn’t looking toward where Kiernan and Felicity had disappeared.

He was watching Val, Eleanor, and Cahill exit a door at the far end of the barn, into the rain.

Val had led El and Cahill to this spot.

They were well above the corral, out of the horse’s line of sight, and wearing camouflage ponchos that they’d belted to keep them from flapping in the wind.

Jack had set up panels earlier to create a chute that would direct the horse into the round corral.

Walker Riley expertly backed the horse trailer into place, with Jack and Dax directing him in.

Walker and Matt Halderman exited the cab, meeting with Jack and Dax for several minutes of conversation.

“They’ll be talking about how this horse loads and unloads. Some of the horses are completely passive, but from what Walker has told Jack, this one’s more aggressive.”

“Aggressive?” El sounded apprehensive.

“Kicking, biting.”

“Oh, dear.”

“They know how to handle him,” Cahill said.

The consultation broke up. Walker went to the front of the trailer, Matt and Dax to the back and Jack to the center of the corral.

Cahill made a sound. “What?” El asked, looking from one to the other.

“Jack’s saying it’s his space. Right from the start,” Cahill said.

“Exactly. Oh, they brought his paddock buddy,” Val added as Dax swung open the solid gate of the trailer and they could see two horses angled inside.

“His what?”

“Horses are herd animals,” Val said, sharing what Jack had taught her. “They don’t like to be alone. This might make it easier on him.”

The paddock buddy unloaded himself, wandering over to Jack to check him out. Jack held his position, made the horse wait a moment, then rubbed his nose.

“Ready,” he said in a low voice.

Matt went in to the trailer, swinging the second gate so it protected him from the horse. Even so, the horse made a move toward him before he turned and exited the trailer.

El sucked in a breath. “He’s gorgeous.”

“He is that,” Cahill agreed.

The horse cut the distance to Jack in half and reared. Jack stayed still. The horse tossed his head twice, then finally broke to one side, trotting over to his paddock buddy.

“Gorgeous and trouble on four legs,” Cahill said.

Dave strode across the corral to the audience.
